Status Quo Reigns Supreme

As we all enjoy Maine’s pretty great weather this summer, and our spectacular beaches, let us all be thankful for the “status quo” of Goose Rocks Beach.  Our Town of Kennebunkport officials have shared that while the impending legal decisions will ultimately impact our citizen’s and visitor’s recreational rights, for now, it’s business (recreation) as usual, as it has been for the last 100 years or more!

So enjoy your walks.  Enjoy playing with your kids and grand-kids as you sit at low tide.  Build a sand castle or fly a kite.  But DO NOT take that for granted, for if the Plaintiffs win their lawsuit, your ability to do these simple, unique to the beach kind of things will be by permission only, with signs and bitter enforcement issues in our future.

Looking down the beaches and seeing kids, seagulls and beach umbrellas could be a thing of the past, if the plaintiffs prevail.  They’d have signs posted everywhere, changing both the appearance and the character of Goose Rocks Beach.   While there is not much a citizen or visitor can do with the battle completely in the hands of lawyers and judge, we certainly can continue to follow the progress of the suit, stay tuned to Facebook and this site, and speak up clearly when you have the chance about your thoughts around recreational access.

The Portland Press Herald ran this article yesterday, http://www.pressherald.com/news/goose-rocks-test-of-public-private-rights_2011-07-31.html,  and your comments at the bottom would be appreciated.  Your continuing support, and the voters support of the Town of Kennebunkport’s defense of the beach for all is tremendous, and valued very highly.  Thank you all.
